How do ASHPs work?

Outside Air

The heat pump draws in heat from the outside air, even if it’s cold outside.

Cool

A refrigerant in the system absorbs the heat from the air, turning into a cool gas.

Compress

The cool gas is compressed, increasing its temperature and turning it into a hot gas.

Condense

The hot gas releases its heat into your home as it condenses back into a liquid, warming the space.

Efficiency means cost savings

Efficiency measures how well a device converts energy into usable heat for your home. The most efficient heating systems can deliver several times the energy they consume.

Traditional furnaces and boilers, which burn fossil fuels, typically operate at 78-98% efficiency. In contrast, heat pumps can produce 3 to 4 kilowatts (kW) of heat for every 1 kW of electricity used, achieving up to 400% efficiency. Using electricity instead of fossil fuels, heat pumps are both more environmentally friendly and highly efficient.

Heat pumps also use up to 70% less electricity than other electric heating systems by extracting and transferring heat from the outside air into your home.
